Cutting Edge Direct Mail Helps Cannabis Win Big in Massachusetts

With the campaign to legalize marijuana in Massachusetts under attack and tightening as the 2016 General Election approached, Winning Mark worked with Yes on 4 campaign and the Analyst Institute to develop a direct mail experiment to test the effectiveness of a direct mail program.  The result: some of the most persuasive mail ever tested and a historic victory.

Yes on 4’s mail program significantly increased the vote margin, increased support and decreased opposition for Question 4

Integrating Digital, Print and Experimentation for Yes on 91

In 2014, Winning Mark played multiple roles in Oregon’s Measure 91 campaign, which was the critical “next victory” after Washington and Colorado. We combined experimentation, direct mail and multiple digital platforms to find new and unexpected supporters in every corner of the state, while shoring up the most at-risk soft supporters. To leverage Oregon’s 3 week vote-by-mail voting period, we matched our target GOTV audience to Facebook. We then developed an app that enabled people to instantly see which of their friends who were in that pool had not yet returned their ballot and pestered them to vote.

Winning Mark’s integration of direct mail and the most cutting edge targeting experiments definitely delivered votes that we would have otherwise never have won.

Taking the Fight National with NCIA

While National Cannabis Industry Association members were in Washington, DC meeting with their Representatives for their 6th annual Lobby Days, we drew likely supporters to highly optimized mobile landing pages, generating hundreds of emails in a two-day window to Members of Congress from voters back in their districts. Not only did we demonstrate the power of the issue, we helped NCIA build their list by Congressional districts across the nation.

We called Winning Mark on a Friday afternoon in need of a digital strategy to support our fast-approaching D.C. lobby days. By Monday morning they were driving hundreds of calls and emails to Congress from National Cannabis Industry Association members and other cannabis activists in targeted states.
